Our Favorite Attractions In Ecuador

Even though Ecuador is a small country, there is an insane amount of things to do, and they’re all so different from each other. One day you could be surfing waves on the coast, and the next you’re in the Amazon looking for snakes. (Okay, maybe not the next day, because it’s like a 24-hour journey, but you get the point!)

Many travelers fly into Quito for a brief visit and then hop on a flight to the famous Galapagos Islands. But let me tell you, there is so much more to see and discover in the South American Country.

Ecuador is uniquely situated right on the equator, making it one of the few countries in the world that boasts all four distinct types of landscape: the stunning coast, the highlands, the lush Amazon jungle, and the extraordinary Galapagos Islands.

Each region offers its own unique experiences and attractions, from the culture and rich history of Quito to the incredible biodiversity found in the rainforests of the Amazon. Whether you’re trekking in the Andes, biking through the adventure town of Baños, or walking along the black beaches of Mompiche, Ecuador is about to blow your mind!

These 10 tourist attractions will lead you through epic adventures and unforgettable cultural experiences in Ecuador. Let’s dive in!

1. The Galapagos Islands

It doesn’t get better than the Galápagos Islands. This remote archipelago is home to some of the most unique species on Earth, including giant tortoises, marine iguanas, and blue-footed boobies.

The Galapagos is in a completely different league when it comes to wildlife experiences. Charles Darwin—you know, the guy who developed the theory of evolution—was completely captivated by these islands and their inhabitants.

In 1835, Darwin landed on the islands, where he spent five weeks observing and collecting specimens. His findings ultimately led to his theory of natural selection and forever changed our understanding of life on Earth.

Because the Galápagos Islands sit at the intersection of three ocean currents, it’s a huge hub for different marine life. The islands’ unique seismic and volcanic activity has given rise to some fascinating wildlife, including land iguanas, giant tortoises, and various finches.

And now all these years later, we can visit the islands and swim in the crystal clear waters with sea lions, snorkel with all kinds of marine life, hike through volcanic landscapes, and discover the evolution of species up close. If that doesn’t get you pumped up for a trip to Ecuador, we don’t know what will!

Located just a quick flight from Quito or Guayaquil, the Galápagos Islands are a must-visit for anyone interested in nature and wildlife. You’ll find eco jungle hostels as well as luxury cruises to explore the islands.

It’s definitely going to be one of the more expensive activities in Ecuador but it’s also the absolute best.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

  • How to get there:
    • Fly into Galápagos Ecologic Airport from Quito or Guayaquil.
    • Quito Flight Time: 2h 10m.
    • Guayaquil Flight Time: 1h 55m.
  • Best time to go:
    • There isn’t really a bad time to visit the Galapagos. Sitting right on the equator, the temperatures remain pretty consistent year-round.
    • However, June to December is considered the “dry season” with cooler water temperatures, making it a great time for snorkeling and diving. The other months bring their own unique experiences, such as mating and hatching season for some of the animals.
  • Tips for visiting the Galapagos:
    • Snorkeling and Diving are the two main activities in the Galapagos. You’ll want to book a tour or excursion to experience the best spots.
    • Do not feed the wildlife! This is a big no-no and can harm the natural behaviors of the animals.
    • Be prepared for strict rules and regulations in order to preserve the island’s delicate ecosystem. Everything from where you can walk to what kind of sunscreen you can use will be monitored. You’ll want to bring reef safe sunscreen to help protect the underwater ecosystems.
    • Pack light, comfortable clothing and sturdy shoes for hiking through the volcanic landscapes. Sun protection is also a must, so don’t forget your hat and sunscreen!
    • Some popular islands to visit:
      • Isabela: Gorgeous giant tortoises and awesome beaches, great for snorkeling!
      • Santa Cruz: Amazing wildlife, like those famous blue-footed boobies, plus the popular town of Puerto Ayora.
      • San Cristobal: Cool historical spots like the Interpretation Center and pretty views, perfect for hiking and exploring!

2. Visit The Middle Of The World

One of the most unique things about Ecuador is that Quito, the capital city, is located directly on the equator. Hence why “ECUA”dor is named as such. This means that you can literally stand in both the northern and southern hemispheres at the same time! The official monument marking this location is called Mitad del Mundo (Middle of the World), and it’s a must-see attraction during your trip to Ecuador.

FUN FACT: The equator is actually slightly off from where the monument is located. There is an exact marking on the ground about 200 meters away.

At Mitad del Mundo, you can take pictures with one foot in each hemisphere, visit a museum about the indigenous cultures of Ecuador, and participate in fun experiments that demonstrate the effects of being on the equator. With the water test, you’ll be able to see how the water flushes down one way in one hemisphere but in the other hemisphere, it flushes down the other way.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

  • Address: Av. Manuel Córdova Galarza SN, Quito 170311, Ecuaador
  • Hours: 9 AM – 6 PM.
  • Entrance Fee: $5 (Ecuador uses the US Dollar, and you will need cash at most places).
  • Mitad Del Mundo isn’t in the center of Quito; it’s about an hour’s drive away. You can get there by bus or Uber.
  • You can also join a tour that includes Mitad del Mundo in their itinerary. This way, you’ll have a guide to explain the history and significance of this location. After visiting Mitad del Mundo you’ll also go for a ride on the TelefériQo Cable Car for amazing views of Quito!
  • Best time to Visit: If possible, try to plan your visit during the Equinox (March or September), when you can see the sun directly above the monument, making it an even more unique experience.
  • Tips for Visiting Mitad Del Mundo:
    • Ubers are also available in Quito, which is a more budget-friendly and safe transportation option.
    • Be prepared for crowds and long lines, especially during peak tourist season. Try to visit early in the morning or later in the evening to avoid the rush.

3. Walk Through Quito’s City Center

Quito’s historical center, dating back to the 16th century, is among the oldest and best-preserved in the Americas. Founded in 1534 on the ruins of an ancient Incan city, it showcases remarkable colonial architecture and urban planning. Its designation as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1978, alongside Krakow, Poland, recognizes its cultural significance and well-preserved heritage.

The city played a crucial role in the Spanish colonial empire and offers a glimpse into the intersection of Indigenous and colonial histories. As you walk through the streets you’ll quickly see the fusion of Spanish and Indigenous cultures in both the architecture and daily life.

We highly recommend taking a walking tour of Quito. Of course, you can explore on your own, but what better way to see a city than with a local? Plus, it’s FREE! You’ll just need to tip your guide at the end.

We recommend $5-$10 per person, depending on how long the tour is and how much you enjoyed it.

We stopped in at one of the oldest tamale restaurants and were able to try samples. The tamales were out of this world; they had so much flavor and were less than $1 for three! Don’t be afraid to try new foods while you’re exploring the city.

Quito is located between mountains, so it has beautiful viewpoints from where you can take the most amazing pictures of the city and enjoy the view. The old churches are seeping with colonial architecture, and you can also visit some of the famous museums like Casa del Alabado and Museo de la Ciudad.

We hate to end on a bad note, but you need to be aware of your surroundings in the city. We never felt in any danger when we were in Quito, but the city does have a high crime rate. Just be mindful of your belongings and don’t walk around at night, even if you’re in groups. It’s just best to call an Uber or taxi to get around.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

  • Quito is the capital of Ecuador and will most likely be where you start your travels.
  • Located in the Andean Foothills.
  • Altitude: 2,850m (9,350ft) above sea level.
  • Currency: US Dollar.
  • Best Time to Visit Quito: June to September are the driest months of the year and are considered to be the best time to visit Quito. The weather is mild, with sunny days and cooler nights. This is also peak tourist season, so expect higher prices and larger crowds.
  • Tips:
    • Pack layers, while it can be warm and sunny during the day, it can get chilly at night due to the altitude.
    • Don’t forget sunscreen and a hat, as Quito is closer to the equator, the sun can be strong.
    • Don’t walk alone, whether day or night. It’s always safer to be in a group or use transportation.
    • Take it slow. If you aren’t used to the altitude, it’s best to take things slow and avoid overexerting yourself. Stay hydrated and listen to your body.

4. Hike To A Glacier In Cotopaxi National Park

One of my fondest memories of our time in Ecuador was staying for two nights at The Secret Garden Hostel in Cotopaxi National Park, therefore making this a must-visit for anyone traveling through the country. Located just 2 hours south of Quito, this beautiful park is home to one of the world’s most iconic and highest active volcanoes, Cotopaxi.

The hostel itself is located at an altitude of around 3,800 meters and offers stunning views of Cotopaxi as well as comfortable accommodation and delicious meals. Seriously, you can stay in a hobbit house and there are alpacas right outside your door! But the real highlight of staying here is the opportunity to hike up to a glacier on Cotopaxi.

The Secret Garden Hostel offers guided hikes to the glacier starting early in the morning. The hike takes about 6-7 hours round trip and includes some challenging sections, but it is well worth it once you reach the glacier. Standing at around 5,000 meters, you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape and the opportunity to touch a real glacier.

For those who are not up for a full-day hike, the hostel also offers shorter hikes to different lookout points where you can still get incredible views of Cotopaxi without the freezing your butt-off part. We can’t recommend this enough. If you’re headed to Ecuador, Cotopaxi needs to be at the top of your list.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

The Secret Garden Hostel

  • Packages: 3 Days/2 Nights.
    • Prices start at $110 a person.
  • Includes:
    • One-way transportation from Quito to Cotopaxi.
    • Free guided two-hour welcoming hike.
    • Three meals included.
    • Free access to the jacuzzi and sunroom.
    • Free tea, coffee, snacks, and drinking water.
    • A spare day to book additional tours (Glacier hike) or hang out and feed the alpacas.
  • Tips:
    • Drink plenty of water, and make sure to acclimatize before attempting the glacier hike. The hostel offers a free two-hour welcoming hike on your first day, which is a great way to ease into the altitude.
    • Don’t forget to bring warm and waterproof clothing as the weather can change quickly up in the mountains. You’ll want gloves, a hat, and a good pair of hiking boots as well.
    • You will be without phone service and wifi during your stay at the hostel, so take this time to disconnect and fully immerse yourself in the natural surroundings.
    • This is a great stop on your way to Baños, the Quilotoa Loop, or other destinations in Ecuador.

5. Party In Montañita

We don’t typically tell people they CAN’T MISS partying in a certain place unless it’s Tomorrowland, but Montañita is definitely the party capital of Ecuador. Located on the coast, this small town is dingy, loud, crowded, and a whole lot of fun. If you’re looking for a wild night out, this is the place to be.

Montañita is a backpacker paradise, everything is cheap and no one cares if you’re wearing the same clothes for the third day in a row. Everyone is just there to have a good time, dance until sunrise, and enjoy the beach life.

Every night Cocktail Alley, a street with what seems like 100 cocktail stands all selling drinks for a couple of dollars, is packed with tourists and locals alike. Reggaetón is blaring, drinks are flowing, and the clubs are open until the early hours of the morning.

This is not the place you wear your Sunday best. Flip flops, shorts, and a tank top are the unofficial dress code for a night out in Montañita. Luckily, there isn’t much else to do in the town, so have a late night, sleep until noon, head out for a surf or paragliding, and then… do it all again!

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

  • Located on the Santa Elena Peninsula in Ecuador, Montañita.
  • Guayaquil to Montañita: 3.15 hours by bus.
  • Best time to visit: Montañita is a year-round destination, but the peak season is from December to April, when the weather is warm and dry.
  • Tips:
    • Go paragliding over the coast.
    • Book your bus ticket in advance during peak season to avoid long waits and sold-out buses.
    • Eat at the Almuerza del dia’s, these are set menus that include a soup and entree for around $2. (It’s insanely cheap!!)
    • One of the biggest clubs in Montañita is called “Lost Beach” and they have some pretty big named DJ’s come to play.
    • Montañita can feel really safe since everyone knows everyone. But keep your wits about you and don’t walk alone at night.

Where To Stay In Montañita

6. Take A Surf Lesson

Ecuador isn’t usually a destination people think of when they think of good surf spots, but with about 640 kilometers of coastline, it doesn’t get much better! Ecuador has amazing beaches for beginners, with gentle waves and warm water. From north to south, you can find some epic spots to surf.

And it’s super cheap compared to other popular surf destinations! Rent a board for less than $10 a day or take a lesson with a local instructor for under $20. Not only will you have an unforgettable experience catching some waves, but you’ll also be supporting the local economy and community.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

  • Where to go Surfing in Ecuador:
  • Best time to go surfing in Ecuador?
    • December to April is the peak season for surfing in Ecuador, with consistent swells and warm weather. However, you can find good waves all year round.

7. Hike The Quilotoa Loop

One of the most popular hikes in Ecuador is the Quilotoa Loop, a 3-day trek through stunning Andean landscapes and remote indigenous villages. The highlight of the hike is reaching the crater lake at Quilotoa, an emerald-green lagoon formed by a collapsed volcano. The views are out of this world.

Along the way, you will pass through the small villages of Chugchilan and Isinlivi. These villages offer a glimpse into traditional Andean life and are great places to stop to spend the night or enjoy a traditional Ecuadorian meal.

On your last day of the hike, you can take a bus or taxi back to Latacunga, where you can catch a bus to Quito or another destination in Ecuador. We recommend heading to Baños, a popular adventure town with hot springs and plenty of outdoor activities.

And if 3 days of trekking doesn’t sound like your cup of tea, you can also do a day hike that only goes around the crater lake.

Where To Stay On The Trek

8. Explore The Beautiful Cuenca

Cuenca is one of the most beautiful cities in all of South America. The colonial city has that charming European flair that will make you feel like you’re in a fairytale.

The streets are filled with blooming flower markets, just about every cafe has a terrace with mountain views, and the colonial architecture is breathtaking. It’s no wonder Cuenca has been named a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Not only is Cuenca one of the prettiest cities, but it also has a rich history dating back to pre-Incan times. Founded in 1557, the city has seen its fair share of colonialism and independence struggles. Take a stroll around the historic center and visit landmarks like the Cathedral of Immaculate Conception, Calderon Park, and Tomebamba River.

You only need a day or two to explore the city, but it’s worth staying a bit longer to fully immerse yourself in its beauty. Plus, Cuenca is known for its artisanal crafts like Panama hats (which actually originated from Ecuador) and ceramics, making it a great place to shop for unique souvenirs.

Oh! And you can get a kilo of any fruit at the central market for just $1!! We made a haul of exotic fruits like cherimoya, soursop, and granadilla for just a few dollars. While visiting the market try out the Cooking Class & Market Tour in Cuenca!

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

  • Cuenca is in the south of Ecuador and is accessible by bus or plane from major cities like Quito and Guayaquil.
  • Quito to Cuenca: 8 hour drive.
  • Guayaquil to Cuenca: 3.5 hour drive.
  • Best time to visit Cuenca:
    • June -September is the best time to visit Cuenca as it is the dry season. The weather is mild and pleasant with average temperatures ranging from 50-70 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Cooking Class & Market Tour in Cuenca:
    • This tour will guide you around the market, introduce you to local vendors, and help you pick out fresh ingredients for a hands-on cooking class. You’ll learn how to make traditional dishes with authentic recipes and techniques.
  • Tips for Cuenca:
    • Wear sneakers, you will be walking a lot.
    • Visit the nearby El Cajas National Park for scenic hikes and beautiful lakes.
    • Don’t miss out on trying the local delicacies like cuy (guinea pig) and hornado (roast pork).
    • Carry cash because most places won’t accept cards.

9. Do Extreme Sports In Baños De Agua Santa

Baños has been named the Adventure Capital of Ecuador, and it is chock full of fun. The town is surrounded by mountains, waterfalls, and rivers, making it an epic playground for extreme sports enthusiasts. From white-water rafting to canyoning to bungee jumping, each day will have something exciting waiting for you!

One of the wildest things we did was fly down the Río Blanco on some intense white-water rafting—it was awesome. But if you’re feeling like taking it easy, join a “do it yourself” bike ride up and down the hills of Baños to visit 8 beautiful waterfalls. This is one of the most popular things to do in Baños, you ride as far as you’d like and visit 1 or all 8 waterfalls.

Once your thighs have had enough peddling, you’ll see big buses headed back into the city that grab all the bikes and throw them (Yes, they actually throw them) in the back of a trailer and take everyone back to town! You just have to wave them down. Or for something even less strenuous you can visit the iconic Casa del Arbol “swing at the end of the world” with a view of an active volcano.

And, of course, after a day of extreme sports, your body will be craving some relaxation and rejuvenation. Lucky for you, Baños is famous (and named) for its many thermal hot springs perfect for soaking in after a long day of adrenaline-fueled activities.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Baños

  • Quito to Baños: 4 hours by bus.
    • We recommend spending 3-5 days in Baños.

One of the coolest things we did in Ecuador was canoe down the Amazon. The dense rainforests all around and gorgeous Macaws flying overhead, it was awesome! If you’re an animal lover, this is one of the most unique experiences in Ecuador. With lush greenery and exotic animals everywhere you look, it’s like stepping into a different world.

Happy Gringo offers guided tours and excursions into the heart of the Amazon, where you can witness its incredible biodiversity and learn about the indigenous communities that call it home.

From hiking through dense jungle to spotting rare wildlife, a trip to the Amazon is like nothing you’ve ever seen! I’m talking about fishing for piranhas, seeing pink dolphins, and spotting a caiman lurking in the water.

If you don’t have the time for an overnight tour, this day trip from Baños is an epic way to see the Amazon in one day.

Tips & What to Pack for the Amazon:

Ecuador Will Always Have A Place In Our Hearts

We told you, Ecuador is awesome! The small South American country is by far one of the most underrated destinations on the continent and I’m here to make sure it doesn’t get overlooked anymore. Between the cultural hubs in Quito and Cuenca, the adventure spots in Baños and Mindo, and the beautiful beaches on the coast, you will easily be begging for more time to do all the tourist attractions in Ecuador!

Luckily, all the hotspots make somewhat of a circle or a J shape, so you can generally start and end in any city. Our biggest recommendation for this trip would be to take your time. Don’t just rush from one place to the next. Take a few days to enjoy each spot, really explore all it has to offer, and soak up everything you can from Ecuador.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the must-see attractions in Ecuador?

The top things to see in Ecuador are the Galápagos Islands, Cotopaxi National Park, the Amazon Rainforest, and the historic cities of Quito and Cuenca.

When is the best time to visit Ecuador?

The best time to visit Ecuador is whenever you have the time! Because it’s located on the Equator, the temperature stays relatively consistent throughout the year. And because of the diverse landscape, there is no time when the country is consistently rainy or dry. So whenever you have the chance, pack your bags and head to Ecuador!

Is it safe to travel to Ecuador?

Ecuador has recently experienced some internal conflict, but outside of those events, the country is generally safe for tourists. Petty theft is common, so make sure to keep an eye on your stuff.

Pro tip: If you’re taking night buses, keep your shoes on and your backpack straps wrapped around your legs. People hop on and off the bus all day and night, and they like to grab things that aren’t theirs—shame!

Is Ecuador expensive?

Ecuador is one of the cheapest countries in South America, with dorm beds starting at $5 and a double room for $20. Buses cost around $1 per hour of travel, and meals at local restaurants can be as cheap as $2-3. The Galápagos Islands are the most expensive part of Ecuador, but even there, you can find budget-friendly options.

Where is the best place to hike in Ecuador?

Personally, our favorite hike was in Cotopaxi National Park. With its beautiful landscapes, stunning active volcano, and opportunities to spot wildlife such as llamas and condors, it’s a must-see for any hiker. Other great options include the Quilotoa Loop, Chimborazo Volcano, and the Cloud Forests of Mindo.

Rideshare: For new Lyft users, use code WILLIAM4825 to get 50% off your first 2 rides (max $10 USD per ride). Offer valid for 14 days after you take your first ride. For new Uber users, use code psuqbjg4d7rn for the same offer except it’s valid for 30 days.

park sleep fly airport parking discount code

Airport Parking: You’ll need a spot to leave your car at the airport so why not book a spot at a discount. Use code AWESOME7 to get at least $5 off at Airport Parking Reservations or Park Sleep Fly packages.

Wifi Hotspot: We’ve been a huge fan of wifi hotspot devices such as PokeFi (use code GAP24300) because their rates are are hard to beat and it works globally. Solis is another that we recommend. Pros are that you can share the wifi with your whole group but cons are that you have to invest in a device and you have to charge it every night.

eSIM: Lately, we’ve really loved using eSIMs. We’ve tested several over the years and we have access to a few special promotions.

Expedia is also worth using especially with their One Key rewards program which is basically like cash. The exception is Asia where Agoda always has the best prices. Always do a quick check on TripAdvisor as well.

Vacation Rentals: Your first instinct will be to check Airbnb but we always recommend checking VRBO as well if you’re looking for a vacation rental (now eligible for One Key).

Tours: When planning our trips, we always check both Viator and GetYourGuide to at least see what’s out there in the destination that we’re going to. They often have different offerings and prices so check both.

  • HeyMondo – Popular insurance provider for frequent travelers and comes with great coverage and special perks.
  • RATESDOTCA – Search engine Canadians looking for the cheapest insurance including multi-trip annual policies.
