KALAMAZOO COUNTY, Mich. — New police video shows the harrowing moments of July 17, when a deputy was shot and his car was stolen and crashed.

A Kalamazoo County sheriff’s deputy was shot at 8:51 a.m. July 17, after a routine police call turned violent.

Deputies were called to the 6300 block of East AB Avenue in Richland Township for a report of a larceny from an auto in progress.

“Wouldn’t It Be Nice” by the Beach Boys played on the radio as the officer gets out to make contact with the man, the video shows.

“Bro, I’m not breaking the law,” Jaylen Lipsey says repeatedly in the video.

“Stop, I’m telling you to stop,” the deputy says. He gets out of the car, chases Lipsey down the street. Lipsey stops and gets on the ground before a struggle ensues.

A few seconds later, the officer was shot in the leg. The video MLive received through the Freedom of Information Act is redacted, with a black square covering up what occurs.

“Officer has been shot,” a voice on the radio says, relaying a description of the suspect, a black male, shirtless with blue shorts.

The suspect allegedly used the deputy’s gun to shoot the deputy, officials said previously.

A man is then seen running back to the police vehicle and driving off. The vehicle is captured snaking through multiple jurisdictions in Kalamazoo County , past cornfields and onto a highway with its siren sounding.

Cars pulled over as the stolen police car passed as other officers gave chase.

The pursuit ended suddenly, in a crash involving the stolen cruiser and other police vehicles at the I-94 business loop and Lake Street near Kalamazoo .

Lipsey was charged with assault with intent to murder, carjacking and a dozen other counts related to the incident.

The deputy was initially described as being in stable condition, the sheriff’s office said at the time. The deputy, Kaleb Mortimer, was later released from the hospital, according to WOOD-TV.

“We had questions, too,” the Charlotte-Mecklenberg Police Department posted alongside a photo of the “vehicle,” which appeared to be powered by two electric scooters

The police department currently employs 78 officers, which is 10 short of the authorized number serving all seven campuses in the state

The law would have added new standards for sheriffs’ ages, years of service, and previous misconduct and allowed county officials to remove and replace sheriffs who didn’t meet them

Trooper Brad Ritger, 29, fell from the elevated bridge as he worked to deploy spike strips to stop a fleeing driver
